APWA Subsurface Utility Engineering Essentials for Public Works: Smarter Utility Investigations Image

Subsurface utility engineering (SUE) is an engineering practice that focuses on mapping and documenting existing utility facilities to reduce risks during the project delivery process.

This live virtual session will provide an overview of the agreed-upon principles and procedures for conducting utility investigations. It is critical to begin collecting existing utility data in the initial stages of project development. This approach facilitates a thorough utility conflict analysis and identifies strategies that maximize benefits. Using data collected, prioritize avoiding or protecting existing utility infrastructure, or when necessary, relocations. We will also review industry guidelines from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), including the updated ASCE/UESI/CI 38-22.

After completing this course, participants will be better able to:

  1. Explain how utility investigations (SUE) can be integrated into project delivery.
  2. Describe the four quality levels and utility investigation methods.
  3. Describe how SUE can help to reduce project risks of delay and unanticipated costs.
